My daughter has two large dogs amd a cat and her last two economy upright vacuums were woefully inadequate, frequently becoming clogged with fur and being bagless, were messey to empty, noisey and just a sad compromise.

A few days ago came upon the Oreck Dutch 1400 while shopping for a good solution. This is a marvelously designed, beautifully built and amazingly complete machine. Bought one for daughter and will shortly go back for another for my own home. I'm 79 so have had decades of experience with many vacuums. I'm thrilled with my discovery and will tell anyone who asks that as a retired engineer I am at last satisfied ande happy.

The main rule of thumb is that upright cleaners tend to be a lot more effective than cylinders at cleaning pet hair. They have motorised brush heads that are better at prising fur away from carpet fibres. Cylinders don't usually have motorised heads but some models have turbobrushes or electrobrushes, which are designed specifically for this task.
